Hi,
I am new to XML/WBXML OTA and I am trying to understand the Bootstrap process.
It appears from the specification that this is an optional parameter. Why do you include it when sending messages from the web interface and when would Bootstrap normally be used.
I wish to configure mobiles for MMS only and I am not sure whether Bootstrap is required.

From your discussion board it appears some phones also require a Userpin to accept and store configurations. This is not the case with my Nokia 6600. Userpin is optional. The phone just informs me the content is from an untrusted server. Is it only the series 40 that need Userpin? Do other manufacturers use it?

Thanks

That's a good question.

The reason why we include it is because it was present in the examples from the Nokia Series 40 OMA provisioning guide.

The suggestion in that document is that the BOOTSTRAP NAME parm value is used as the descriptive name for the settings.

But the BOOTSTRAP NAME parm is not referenced in the Series 60 documents. Instead, that only talks about a BOOTSTRAP PROVURL parameter which supposedly you can set so that once one message with this PROVURL value has been authenticated by PIN, you don't need a PIN on future provisioning messages with this PROVURL value. I can't say that I have performed any tests with that parameter value.

Motorola's documentation on OMA provisioning also makes reference to how the BOOTSTRAP NAME value is used as a descriptive name for the settings.

So overall, I think it is a good idea to include this value.

Regarding the USERPIN, I think it is more of a Nokia Series 40 issue. Basically, if you don't include a PIN, you get a message on the screen of the phone that says "Failed to receive connection settings".

Thanks for your info Bryce.
The only advantage that I can see from reading all the specs on Bootstrap is that you can apparently delete the settings by sending a Bootstrap document with the same name but no content. I think that is where the bootstrap setting name is important. Nothing to do with the Connection Name of the settings. Have you tried deletion at all? I will attempt this later today or tomorrow along with a non-bootstrap setting. According to the Motorola spec you can also delete a non Bootstrapped setting by sending a Bootstrap document with an empty Name string. I will try that too.

Unfortunately I haven't got a series 40 to play with but it seems like it has some disadvantages, in that a Bootstrap setting is placed in the reserve position on a 5100 and a new Bootstrap set will be rejected if it has already been provisioned with a Bootstrap set? You have to first delete the reserved set. Have you come across this?

Thanks

That's interesting. On a lark, I just tried that on a Nokia Series 40 phone (6170). It didn't delete the existing settings. Instead, I had two settings with the same name, one of which was empty of any actual settings.

That said, I haven't seen any problems with Series 40 phones only being able to accept one bootstrap setting.

In addition to the 6170, I also tried sending multiple bootstrap settings to the 6820. No problems.

I have noticed that you generally can't edit OTA'd settings on Series 40 phones. Thinking that might be related to the bootstrap setting, I just tried sending to the 6820 ... with and without a bootstrap setting. No difference ... settings were view only in both cases.

(And on the 6170, there's no way to edit or create any settings manually. But that might just be an issue with the way my phone is setup.)

Hi Bryce,

We have been talking about USERPIN here. I assume it will also accept any of the PIN methods i.e NETWPIN to save the settings?

Yes, USERPIN or NETWPIN are fine.
