Color screens and imageformats

I am trying to determine which fileformat is supported by most phones when showed on a wml page in an IMG SRC tag.
Untill so far i have allways said that GIF is supported by all phones with color screens, but i have been browsing quite a lot of uaprof files now and can see tha JPEG is there just as much.

Why they did not include PNG in all phones i dont know. It's free and gif is not.

But please tell me.
Is JPEG supported by the same amount of phones as GIF is ?
