Hello

I'm somewhat new (okay very new) to these GSM modems. I just bought the M1213A off of eBay and am quite confused about the pinout connections.

In the user manual, pins are described as follows:
RS232
Pin - Designation
1 - DCD - Data Carrier Detect
6 - RX - Receive Data (out)
2 - TX - Transmit Data
8 - DTR - Data Terminal Ready
9 - GND - Signal ground
7 - DSR - Data Set Ready
12- RTS - Request to send
11- CTS - Clear to send
13- RI - Ring indicator

On wikipedia, RS-232 communication is described as follows:
5 - G
3 - TxD
2 - RxD
4 - DTR
6 - DSR
7 - RTS
8 - CTS
1 - DCD
9 - RI

I'm assuming these pins just match up based on name. However, I just want to make sure that the "receive data" on the modem is NOT supposed to be paired up with the "transmit data" on the PC, right?

Thanks!

Hi Matthew,

I honestly don't know what the correct PIN outs are. But a basic serial 9 to 25 pin converter should do the trick for you.

You want a normal "straight through" cable ... not a "null modem" or "crossover" cable which would crosslink transmit and receive.

Null modem or crossover cables would be specially labeled. A basic 9 to 25 pin serial cable should do the trick ... something like this:

Oops ... wrong cable ... I chose a serial printer cable instead of a serial modem cable. I'm not sure if there's a difference or not, but here's a link for 9 to 25 pin modem cable:

Des,
Does your product interface through the parallel port (25-pins, right) as well?

Hi Matt,

25 pin serial port (e.g., COM1: ), yes ... parallel port (e.g, LPT1: ), no.

I don't think a modem would let you connect it to parallel port ... I think that is for old printers only.
