Hi,
I'm new to mobile communication and would like to clarify few things. I've searched quite a lot regarding the subject which I've posted. I wish to do a college project and while searching, I'm came across this content server.

Can anyone tell me what exactly is the role of the content server? Is a content server a must to send and receive MMS? The wiki on MMS tells that MMSC itself can be called as the content server. This has confused me. I hope the knowledgeble guys out here can clear my doubts :-)

Hi,

I don't really understand what you're asking.

But maybe the following links will help sort you out:

I'll put it in one sentence. What is the role of the content server? I'll probably move to MMSC once this is solved :D

I don't understand what the "content server" is to which you refer?

The role of a "content server" depends on your application.

A content server serves content ... how and what content it serves is application dependent.

Oops! I guess you guys don't use the concept of content server. I'm on a hobby project now and it's been half completed by someone and the rest is upto me to finish. The content server is doing the same job, like you mentioned. It's holding content.

But, the confusing thing is, the half finished documentation says that the mobile phone is sending the MMS, whereas in the concept of MM7, we use the internet to send messages. Presently, I'm using NetBeans 5.5.1 with the mobility pack installed. Have I mistook the concept? Please let me know. Thanks :-)

I guess I don't really understand where the confusion is.

Somewhere on the mobile operator network there is an MMSC.

If the mobile phone is sending an MMS message, it performs an HTTP (or WSP) POST to the MMSC using the MM1 protocol. This POST contains the entire content of the MMS message in MM1 encoding.

If you are connecting to an operator MMSC, you are performing an HTTP POST to the MMSC using the MM7 protocol. This post contains the entire content of the MMS message in MM7 encoding.

The MMSC takes responsibility for delivering the MMS message to the recipient. So in some ways, the MMSC is a content server, as it holds the content of the MMS message while it is in-transit to the recipient (see http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm).

I guess my point is just that "content server" is a vague term. Any server that holds any type of content is a content server.
