Hello,

I learned that a computer generated SMS with a proper PID can replace an old SMS in the Incoming Message Queue of the user's handset with a new SMS.

This avoids clogging up the SMS Inbox.

Question 1: Is this feature implemented in all/most handsets?

Question 2: If a user replies to such a message, will the outgoing SMS self-replace also an older one in the Sent Message Queue?

(I want the Sent SMS Queue to stay slim by keeping none or at least only the last such Reply SMSs.)

Thanks, Bert

Hi,

For background, there's an old thread that discusses this here:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/13536.html

It's been awhile since we've done any testing on this feature, so I don't know how well this works on modern smart phones. Last time I looked at it was a few years ago, and it was pretty widely implemented.

However, back then, phone software paid more attention to these types of standards. It seems that newer so-called smart phones have so much complexity that they forget about some of these older capabilities. (The way the iPhone handles SMS conversations, I'd be surprised if it supported this. But maybe it does.)

Regarding question 2, it will have no effect on any sent message queue. SMS doesn't have a concept of replies or threads in the actual messages themselves.

Des,

Great, and thanks a million for your replies. Your answer about outgoing SMS replacement is definite, so I consider that subject closed (unfortunately as this feature would have been very neat for my intended application, to keep the outbox small).

Regarding the PID / replace implementation in phones: Would not there be some form standardisations / certification procedure which handset manufacturers have to go through to confirm that their phones are standards compliant? Like that we could be sure that PID is implemented ubiquitously (or not).

Thanks, Bert

Hi Bert,

There are a lot of "optional" features in the various compliance tests. I don't know where this feature falls in the optional column, but I suspect it does.

That said, this feature goes back a long way, and I know that when we looked more closely at it several years ago, it was very widely implemented.

The question is really whether or not the newer phones are still implementing it. Out of curiosity, I tried sending a replacement message to an iPhone, and it did work. So I'd say that's a good sign that it continues to be well supported.

Thanks Des. Sounds like my application may be feasible, after all.
