As I get deeper and deeper into my project, I've gone back and forth on possible solutions. Now, I'm back at NowSMS but I want to clarify a few things.

I need to be able to send and receive SMS and MMS from many different numbers. I do not have access to my user's phone's settings, so from what I gather, it is safest to use an operator MMSC to send these messages. Is this correct so far?

Next, I believe I need to make some decisions about the modems I buy and the carrier I use. If I understand right, I will place one sim card in each modem, and hook them all up to the internet, then use your gateway to actually send and receive. Is this correct? Does NowSMS recommend any particularly high throughput modems? Initially, I'd like to have about 15 numbers going

Thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin,

Figuring it all out is a rather grand ambition. Hopefully you can figure out enough.

Yes, generally speaking, in most cases, sending messages through the operator MMSC is the best solution.

Changing user settings only works for a closely controlled/closed user group that only interacts with your service. (Changing the settings makes the user unable to properly send/receive via the operator MMSC.)

Any modems that you use do not get directly connected to the internet. They get hooked up to the PC running NowSMS.

When you talk about a large number of modems, the biggest challenge is finding a USB modem whose drivers will allow that many instances of the same type of modem (or even different modems) to be installed.

Several years ago we ran some tests of NowSMS with 16 connected modems, but they were connected to a multiport serial (RS232) card, so they didn't require any manufacturer software drivers to function. NowSMS could just communicate with them directly via the serial ports.

USB modems are a little different because they always require manufacturer drivers, and many of these drivers assume only a single modem is to be installed.

There are also issues with USB in that to facilitate 15 modems, you will need to use USB hubs, and these hubs are where the most problems seem to occur. To my mind, it is unclear whether the problems are with the modem drivers or the USB hubs. It is also unclear whether or not it is always understood that when using USB hubs, you should always use powered hubs as modems tend to draw the max 500mA per USB port.

That's the biggest challenge that you're going to face, configuring a machine with that many USB modems so that all of the drivers are happy.

As a backup strategy, you may need multiple PCs each managing a more limited number of USB devices.
