Hi,

Maybe you could give us a hint of what you have found out so far? Such as what the CIR acronym stands for in the context of your research.

To the best of my knowledge, CIR stands for Communications Initiation Request. Some protocols that use WAP Push define a CIR format within their protocol. The purpose of a CIR in this context is for the server to tell the client that it has new data, and the client should connect to the server to fetch the new data.

By not pushing the actual new data, the push message can be kept small. For example, if SMS is used for the CIR push, a single SMS is limited to 140 bytes in size. This push simply tells the client that the server has new information and the client should initiate a connection over TCP/IP to retrieve it.

All this said, I'm only aware of the acronym CIR being used in the Wireless Village (WV)/Instant Messaging and Presence Service (IMPS) protocol.

SyncML uses a similar concept but refers to it as SAN (Server Alerted Notification).

For more information, you would need to refer to the documentation for that particular protocol, as it is not a generic SMS concept, but a protocol specific concept, where the protocol specific push message just happens to be sent over SMS.

Or ... maybe the CIR that you are talking about is completely different.

In the beginning, I am not very sure about what CIR is. But after reading your professional answer, I find what I want is just what you have told.
Yet, I have some more question about it.In the reply, you mentioned the CIR format. So what is the detail of a CIR format? Are they similar in different protocols? And if I want to learn more about CIR, where can I find more detail document?
Thanks a lot for your anttention and the professional answer. Thank you.

The format is protocol dependent, so it depends on the protocol you are implementing.

Wireless Village/IMPS and SyncML are both Open Mobile Alliance protocols, for which specifications can be found at the OMA release page: http://openmobilealliance.org/Technical/current_releases.aspx
