Hi All,
A little technical query. What is and who defines the maximum size (in bytes) of an MMS message? What happens if a mobile phone user tries to send an MMS that exceeds this maximum size? What kind of a response does the sender get?

Thanks in advance,

Santosh

Hi,

Basically the size of an MMS message depends on two things.

1. The size that the operator can handle.
2. The size that the phone can handle.

Average size of an MMS across different networks is around 50KB. There may be operators who may support even bigger messages than this. As per my assumption, Network will decide on the size it can handle based on the space it can allocate to store a message before its downloaded and the network traffic.

The other thing is the size that a device can support. The phone that you are using may not be able to handle very large messages. problem may be something like allocating a huge chunk like 200KB to form an MMS message to send or even to download, may not be possible on most of the phones. So the phone may want to restrict the size to say 30KB. In order to specify the maximum size, phones make use of UAProf (defined in WAP specs).

Based on the size restrictions on the phone as well as the network, the MMS server will in advance know the maximum size that it can handle for that phone. So a message can either be sent or dropped based on this max size.

If you get to know some more information on this, or if you have any other view, plz post in this thread

Hope this helps

For the case of Malaysia, all three operators limit the size of MMS to 100kB (including those sent across networks).

My understanding is that most recent handset models are able to support 100kB with maybe a couple of models capable of upto 300kB (example, SonyEricsson P900).

If the user tries to send a message larger than that allowed by the operator (setting at MMSC), the phone will still attempt to upload the message but it will only fail right at the very end when it is eventually rejected by the MMSC.

Hi,

Thanks for your views. Can you tell us how does MMSC reject the message. If I am not wrong, it has to be by using M-Send-Cnf PDU with rejected status.
