Hello all,

Was discussing the MMS file formats and WAP with an engineer and here are some of the questions presented to me. Perhaps someone can help.

a) What is the basic compression method that holds together and combines the multiple media elements/files within the MMS file? From my readings of the OMA's "MMS Encapsulation Protocol" document it appears that it is gzip. Is this correct?

b) With this in mind, are there any detailed specification documents available that detail, via functional step-by-step examples, about what precisely occurs during the creation and playback of an MMS file? That is, on the playback side what software routines or applications within the phone decompresses and extracts the media files within an MMS file? Is this gzip also?

c) When an MMS file is transmitted, I've read that WAP also binary encodes the MMS file, in essence compressing the file yet again. Is this correct? I have been looking for the OMA's WAP specification document (but can't find it) as well as any documentation that could detail how this binary encoding process works. Could someone point us in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

I think WSP protocol is the basic one. And MMS encapsulation is another.
You can download a MMS decoder and MMS examples from www.simpleteam.com
