Hello,
I`m completely new to SMS software and SMS gateways.
I googled around for more information on this subject, but till now this has been the most informative site.
I am trying to setup a server that can send ring-tones, logo`s, MMS, EMS etc.
Clients should be able to order ring tones via internet and via telephone.
Sins I am new to this subject, I have a lot of questions. I hope someone here can help me answer them or point me in the right direction :-) .

-What kind of modem / hardware would I need. How much would this cost +-?
-What kind of software would I need to send the logos etc. through the modem ?
-What other kind of software would I need ?
-Can MIDI / JPG etc. files be sent directly or would they need some kind of conversion.
-What would I need to set up a system to order a ring tone/loge via telephone ?
-What about dealing with different telecom providers ? Is this a problem ?
-To be able to send EMS/MMS, do telecom providers need any necessary hardware or will everything be OK as long as the GSM modem and the receiving GSM support EMS/MMS ?

Maybe someone with experience could tell me how he set up such a system. I could learn a great deal from this.

I thank everybody in advanced for there help :-) !!

A good GSM modem is usually between $200 and $300 USD.

Many GSM phones also have inbuilt GSM modem capabilities, and that is also worth considering.

Keep in mind that a GSM modem accepts a SIM card, and operates over a subscription to a mobile operator. You are charged for sending mesages over that subscription the same as if they were sent from a phone.

The alternative is to get an account with an SMS service provider, and submit messages to that provider through the internet.

Well, it depends on what kind of phones you need to support.

Many of the newer phones can handle GIF, JPEG, MIDI, directly. But older phones use other formats ... the most popular of those formats being Nokia Smart Messaging and EMS. (A search out here on those terms will provide links to more information and discussions.)

This web site was created for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software product, which is one such product for sending messages out via GSM modems or via SMS service providers.

Via SMS or via IVR (interactive voice response)?

I'm not an expert with IVR ... but I know in many countries they use this for ringtone services. That way you can use a conventional premium rate phone number to take orders. Search the web on IVR to find various IVR solutions out there.

To accept requests via SMS, you just need some software that can process received SMS messages and allow you to take some action on them. In NowSMS, we call this the 2-way SMS feature:

When an SMS is received, we pass it to an HTTP script that you configure:

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/2_way_sms_support.htm

The issue there is that you need to have a way of billing. Most people who are accepting orders for content via SMS are using premium rate SMS service providers. Premium rate SMS means that when you send out a message, the receiver of that message gets charged on their phone bill. Sending out premium rate SMS cannot be done with a GSM modem ... you need an account with an SMS service provider (or mobile operator) that supports premium rate SMS. Those providers are often country specific.

It can be. It really varies by country. Oftentimes going with an SMS service provider can be easier than going directly to the different operators because the aggregator has already worked out deals with the operators.

MMS requires GPRS support. EMS can be done just over GSM SMS.

See the following thread for an overview of how MMS works:

Hi,

I'm a complete newbie as well and I have been looking around the net for some information regarding sms for some time now and found this site. Like OP, I am researching the effort need to set up a ringtone, logo site and would like some clarification from Bryce.

Can you recommend any in the states that support GSM ?

Would nowSMS software be able to receive and respond to phone call from handsets or would I need to implement an IVR solution along with nowSMS ?

Being a newbie, I am not sure if an aggregator is synomymous with SMS service provider or SMSC. Could you explain ?

I am also attempting to determine my options and costs to be able to send/receive SMS at our server. We also are currently handling PBX Voice services and would love to be able to deal with both over the same number.

I am in the U.S. making this seemingly harder and I am a poor art instructor.

What is the most cost effective solution for me to send/receive maybe 1000 messages month and if I go with a GPS phone is there one with a tested data connectivity kit someone could recommend in the US or that I can purchase with a month to month plan?

You can try SimplePCConnect, which can be downloaded from www.simpleteam.com. It supports many kinds of functions. It is a DLL driver, you can use it for developing.

Plz Help Me out,

Requirement:

I live in Bangladesh and I want to setup a SMS server which will send ring tones to end users' mobiles based on the request that they would made in my website.

My website will contain thousands of ringtones and registered users can also request for their favourite ringtones if those are not already existing in the server.

If the ringtone is in the server, then the selected ringtones will automatically be delivered to the user. If it is not their, the request will be handled manually, ring tones will be composed according to their needs and uploaded in the server. Then the ring tones will be sent aumatically to the correct user.

I WILL SEND BOTH MONOPHONIC AND POLYPHONIC RINGTONES.

What I Have:
I Have the ring tones, the web site, the web application. So, anyone can browse that site, listen to the tones but can't download in their mobile.

Technology:

What kind of hardware/software do I need? My SMS server could be situated in my country or in other country. Doesn't matter.

Cost:
How much will this cost to me? (Rough figure will do)

1. The SMS server
2. Charges per SMS
3. Hardware
4. Software
5. Any other heads

Another question: Can I set up the whole server by my own? Or I need a SMS server provider?

Please help me out.

With Thanx.

Faiz
